Why the statement of purpose matters
Many executive programmes select on profile. IIM Mumbai's Advanced Project Management and Analytics, for instance, states that selection is based on a detailed profile in the candidate's own words — academic record, designation, roles and responsibilities, and a write-up on expectations from the programme — and that a short test may follow. Even where an entrance test is the main filter, as for the IIM Mumbai Executive MBA, a clear statement helps you decide whether you are applying for the right reasons.
A five-paragraph structure
| Paragraph | What it does | Aim for |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Opening | A specific moment at work that made you want this programme | Concrete, not a quote or cliché |
| 2. Career so far | Outcomes you delivered, not duties you held | Two or three results, with scale |
| 3. Why now, why this programme | Connect your gap to named modules or electives | Specific course names from the curriculum |
| 4. What you bring | How you will contribute to the cohort | Experience others can learn from |
| 5. After the programme | A realistic plan | Specific and modest — not a promise |
An illustrative example
Notice what the sample does: one event, one gap, a link to the curriculum. Replace it with your own facts; do not copy phrasing.
Mistakes that sink statements
- Praising the institute's brand instead of explaining your own need
- Listing duties rather than outcomes and scale
- Overclaiming — anything you cannot back up in an interview
- No link to the curriculum, so it could be for any programme
- Jargon and length — follow the word limit and write for an intelligent outsider
- Typos — they signal carelessness more than any other flaw
Before you submit
- Ask a colleague outside your function to read it — can they say what you want and why?
- Check every claim against your CV and documents
- Read it aloud once; trim anything you would not say to an interviewer
- Match the format and limit given in the application

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a statement of purpose be?
Follow the limit stated in the application. If none is given, a concise page or two that stays specific is usually better than a long one.
Should I mention the institute's brand?
Briefly at most. Admissions readers want your reasons and fit, not praise of the institute.
Can I reuse one statement for several programmes?
Reuse the structure, but rewrite the 'why this programme' paragraph for each, naming real modules or electives.
Do all executive programmes need a statement?
No. Some select on a test result and eligibility, others on a profile write-up. Check the programme page.
