Why IIM Executive Programmes Don't Use CAT
CAT tests aptitude for academic MBA learning — it's designed to predict who will thrive in a 2-year full-time programme alongside fresh graduates and early-career professionals. Executive programmes are for working professionals who have already demonstrated their aptitude through 3-15 years of career results. Work experience quality, professional seniority, and career goals are far better predictors of executive programme success than a standardised test.
What Does Selection Look Like Without CAT?
IIM Nagpur Blended MBA — IIMNAT
IIM Nagpur uses IIMNAT (its own aptitude test) rather than CAT. IIMNAT covers verbal ability, quantitative aptitude, data interpretation, and general awareness. Difficulty: moderate — comparable to GMAT, significantly less competitive than CAT. Followed by GD and PI.
IIM Ahmedabad AGMP — Application + Interview
No test. Selection based on: quality and progression of work experience, statement of purpose, and a selection discussion with IIM-A faculty. The most test-averse pathway to an IIM-A credential.
IIM Kozhikode, Trichy, Indore, Mumbai — Application-Based
Most shorter IIM programmes use application-based selection — no entrance test, no GD. You submit work experience proof, academic certificates, statement of purpose, and sometimes attend a brief telephonic/video screening. The strongest applications have clear career progression and specific goals.
